Girl Scouts and Camp Matoaka

Girl Scouts have been active in the Crittenden, Eclipse and Hobson Community since the end of World War II.  Troops were led by local women.  Troops were also formed in Chuckatuck and Downtown Suffolk. Girl Scouting is still a part of our villages and the activities have changed with the times. Adventure in the out of doors dominated activities from the 1960s to the present.  Camping, canoeing, hiking, crafts, community service and travel were a big part of the fun.

Camp Matoaka

The Tidewater Girl Scout Council headquartered in Norfolk operated a resident camp on Lake Prince in then Nansemond County beginning in the 1930s.  Camp Matoaka offered girls two weeks in the out-of-doors and the girls came from the whole region of lower Hampton Roads. The camp was closed to resident camping in the 1980s and by 1990 the property reverted back to the City of Norfolk. Fast forward to 2020… The Colonial Coast Girl Scout Council is headquartered in Virginia Beach and operates its main resident camp near Williamsburg.
